MINISTER OFFICIALLY OPENS CONSTRUCTION INDABA

The Honourable Minister for Public Works & Transport Pastor Lindiwe Dlamini has advised the construction sector to form public private partnerships (PPP’s) to support government with the Capital Investiment Programme. The Minister was represented by Jabulile Mashwama Minister for Natural Resources and Energy, during the 2nd Annual (CIC) Asakhane Construction Indaba, held at Esibayeni Lodge on the 6th October 2016.
The Minister counselled construction industry stakeholders to propagate on industry improvements and reforms, so that they can have a collaborative effort in uplifting developing enterprises to stimulate sustainable growth of the sector and the country.
“Promote appropriate research on any matter related to the construction industry and its development and implement policy on construction development,” she said.
Dlamini highlighted that government needs the support of the private sector to fund its capital investment, and PPP parties need to share the risks to be best able to manage partnerships to ensure optimum value.
The minister said the construction industry was a vital economic sector as it transforms resources into physical economic and social infrastructure necessary for socio-economic development.
“The construction sector contributes approximately 5% of GDP, it is one of the fastest growing sectors over the past three years. The sector grew by 16.3% in 2014, from 10.4% in 2013 and 3.5% in 2012,” she said.
The Minister indicated that the industry has vast opportunities to reform and improve the construction industry and the conference provided an opportunity for developing and established contractors to share expertise and grow together.
