The core function of CTO is to purchase, maintain and dispose of government vehicles and other related equipment as well as to provide fuel for Government vehicles. CTO also provides vehicles on short term hire to government ministries and departments.

CTO is in the process of being transformed into a parastatal and the Central Transport Organisation Act which establishes the parastatal came into effect in September 2013. Currently the appointment of the Board is being finalised.

CTO has five workshop facilities spread across the country. These facilities are located in Mbabane, Matsapha, Nhlangano, Piggs Peak and Siteki.
