48th Session Commission for Social Development Held from 03-12 And 19 February, 2010
The Permanent Mission participated in the forty-eighth regular session of the Commission for Social Development, held from 3 to 12 February 2010, which was the policy year of a biennial cycle.
54th Session Of The Commission On Status Of Women: Beijing +15 Held From 01 To 12 March, 2010
The Mission participated in the fifty-fourth session of the Commission on the Status of Women which undertook a fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly. Emphasis was placed on the sharing of experiences and good practices, with a view to overcoming remaining obstacles and new challenges, including those related to the Millennium Development Goals. Member States, representatives of non-governmental organizations and of UN entities participated in the session. A series of parallel events provided additional opportunities for information exchange and networking.
Commission On Population And Development Held From 12 To 16 April, 2010
The Mission participated in the Commission on Population and Development held from 12 to 16 april, 2010. This year's session covered a broad range of issues including the major shifts in mortality since 1950, causes of death, health and development, the need for health workers, prevention and treatment of communicable diseases and maternal conditions, preventing injuries and the role of primary health care.
Annual Substantive Session Of The United Nations Economic And Social Council (ECOSOC) - 28 June - 2 July 2010
The Annual Substantive Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) took place from 28 June - 2 July 2010 at UN Headquarters in New York.
Two key elements of the High-level Segment were theAnnual Ministerial Review (AMR) and the Biennial High-level Development Cooperation Forum (DCF). The focus of the AMR and the DCF were to review the progress in international development and to advance the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which world leaders aim to achieve by 2015, as well as the other Internationally Agreed Development Goals (IADGs).
The theme of this year's Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) was "Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to gender equality and the empowerment of women."
United Nations Global Plan Of Action On Trafficking In Persons
The General Assembly adopted a resolution on the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, deciding also to establish a Trust Fund for victims, especially women and children.
Third Session Of The Conference Of States Parties To The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities - 01 -03 September, 2010
The third session of the Conference of States Parties was convened in New York from 1 to 3 September 2010 to discuss the implementation of the Convention. The theme of the session was "Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities through Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".
United Nations General Assembly 65th Session - High-Level Segment
His Majesty King Mswati III accompanied by a high-level delegation, participated in the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly 63 rd Session as well as the General Debate from 21 September to 25 September, 2010.
During this period His Majesty King Mswati III also participated in the high-level Summit on The Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
His Majesty also participated in the General Debate and spoke on the theme of the 65th Session "Reaffirming the United Nations' Central Role in Global Governance".
During his visit His Majesty, King Mswati III also held bilateral meetings with His Excellency President Mahmoud Ahmadinejahd of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah ,Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar and His Majesty King Mohammed IV of Morocco.
He also held talks with Dr. Pascal Lamy, director-General of the World Trade Organization, a number of prominent business people in the USA and Swazi nationals including students who are currently residing in the USA.
Security Council Reform: The Mission's Perspective
The President of the General Assembly, Joseph Deiss, renewed the role of the chairman of the Informal Plenary on the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform, Ambassador Zahir Tanin of Afghanistan. Ambassador Tanin quickly issued a letter on 18th October 2010 to advance the negotiations in accordance to General Assembly Decision 64/568 of September 13 2010.
Many Head of States including our own King Mswati III appealed during the General Assembly debate in September 2010 for member states to move the reform process forward in a decisive manner.
The Kingdom of Swaziland delivered a statement in the General Assembly on 11th November 2010 (by H.E. Mr. Zwelethu Mnisi) under agenda item 119, "The Report of the Security Council", recapitulating the commitment of the country to the African position and rejection of approaches that seek to distort it.
Diplomatic Relations
A number of Missions have submitted requests through this Mission to establish diplomatic relations between their respective countries and the Kingdom of Swaziland at Ambassadorial level. These include Georgia, Mongolia, Estonia, Vietnam, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Montenegro, Slovenia, Nepal and Cambodia.
